Have Our Smart Phones Become A Full Time Job?

Last week out of nowhere, I got really stressed out.

I got stressed out from that device almost all of us carry around with us anywhere and everywhere we go.

My cell phone.

That iPhone 8Plus I carry caused me an unhealthy amount of stress.

It had been a bit since I was on my phone that day, so I was catching up on things + my device was blowing up as I was attempting to catch up on texts, emails, phone calls, and social media. And while doing so, I had deadlines to meet and individuals trying to have conversations with me in person.

So I had a moment of overwhelming stress overcome me.

And at that moment I locked my phone screen and put it away from me, face down.

I realized the stress I was experiencing was so unnecessary, and was so fixable just by doing something so simple, as putting my phone down.

And I realized that my phone in and of itself is an entire full time job, if I allow it to be.

A few days later I was having dinner with someone I hadn’t seen in a long time, and after every question they asked me, they would pick up their phone or look at their Apple watch and respond to messages.

And I don’t think they even realized they were doing that. It was purely out of habit.

So that really got me thinking.

How many of us allow our phones to dictate us? To become a full time job, consuming our thoughts, our lives, our stress levels, and allowing our phones to take away from our presence?

I purposefully do not have my phone out while having a meal with someone else. I’ve always found it rude, and I strive to be present, in the moment, and engaged in conversation with the individual I’m enjoying my time with, rather than being “present”with someone else through my device.

So after those instances, I began aiming to be more intentional with my phone usage, when I use it, and how often I put my thumb to that touch ID.

Our phones are such powerful tools to how we live our lives.

Will we live our lives in the present experiencing this beautiful earth that God gave to us? Or will we spend majority of our time in this world staring at a screen mindlessly scrolling?

Something to think about for your Monday, friends.:) I’d love to know your thoughts on this topic in the comments below!!

xoxo
