The smell of pine spreading through the room.
Lights twinkling back and forth, fading in then out.
The sound of the flames from the fireplace cackling.
The feeling of a fuzzy blanket wrapped around on a cold, wintery evening.
The taste of fresh baked cookies right out of the oven, hitting the tip of the tongue.
This feeling.
The feeling of Christmas.
Christmas isn’t a season. Christmas is a feeling.
I was driving early in the morning a few days back, and I immediately felt Christmas. I didn’t see lights all around or Christmas music playing. I felt it in the air. Because that brisk, cool air reminded me of the holiday season. When I’m walking through my favorite town with lights all around and Christmas carolers nearby.
If you didn’t know this fun little fact about me, I love Christmas.
I’m obsessed with it, actually. I believe it should be celebrated all the time, rather than just for the month of December.
Maybe that’s a little excessive. But stay with me friends! I’m gonna tell you how this obsession of mine formed.
Many of us as children would wake up early Christmas morning bursting with excitement! Excitement to see what Santa brought us, and excitement to see all of the presents underneath the tree.
While I loved that part of Christmas growing up, that’s never been the reason for my love for the holiday.
No, friends.
Wanna know why I love Christmas?
I love birthdays. I have for as long as I can remember. I’ve always made a big deal about anyone else’s birthday as well as my own. I’d throw my own birthday parties, and plan my next celebration a year in advance. I even planned my own surprise sixteenth birthday party, but that’s a story for another time.;)
Well whose birthday is better to celebrate than our very own Savior’s birthday???
Friends, Christmas is the day Jesus was BORN.
It’s the day He entered this world. And wow did He change it.
And it’s no coincidence that because it’s Jesus’s birthday it truly is the most joyful holiday.
On Christmas day, I notice that we laugh louder. We love harder. We celebrate bigger.
We’re more generous. We’re more kind. We’re more patient. We’re more charitable. We’re more prayerful. We’re more joyful.
So now you know my secret, friends.
The secret to why I have such a strong, deep love for this joyous holiday.
It’s not for the presents, for the bonus’s at work, for the dinner feasts, the holiday movies, the decorations, or any of that.
It’s for the feeling. The feeling of being surrounded by those I love most. The feeling of a warm house on a cold day. The feeling of hot chocolate in hand. The feeling of joy, peace, and love all around for celebration of the birth of the One who brings constant joy, peace, and love to our lives every single day.
