How A Mentor Changed My Life Forever

No limits.

Those two words changed my life forever.

It was May of last year (2017) when I decided that I needed to start picking back up on my hobbies. Things I knew I would truly enjoy, other than work. I had been taking voice lessons for four years, and had just finished with my other vocal teacher. I decided it had been a few months and I missed it more than anything.

So I sent an email.

I sent an email not expecting a “yes” or even a reply back.

But THEN, that evening I got a reply back. And I set up my first vocal lesson for the following week.

Little did I know that this particular person I speak of would completely transform my life in every way, shape, and form possible.

At my very first vocal lesson with my teacher, I sang a couple of songs for him that I thought could give him an idea of my voice type.

And it was at my very first lesson that he told me two words: “no limits.”

no limits

I didn’t know what that meant at the time, but I saw those words hanging in a picture frame near his piano, and he repeated himself.

“No limits.”

And by saying this, he meant that there are no limits. No limits to where my voice can go. The only thing holding my voice back from reaching all the mountains and valleys that I want it to reach, is me. My vocals are more than capable of reaching that point. And I am in control of that.

Tonight I was thinking about how different I am today than I was a year and a half ago. How much I have evolved, grown, and learned.

A year and a half ago I made a decision to study under someone I had looked up to for many, many years.

I didn’t expect him to have room in his schedule to take me in as a voice student of his, but I figured that I didn’t have anything to lose. So I sent him an email, and a year and a half later, it brings tears to my eyes to think that that ONE single email changed my life forever.

The impact that my teacher has had on my life as not only a teacher and educator, but as a true life mentor has been life changing. His advice he has given me, his expertise, and the love that he constantly and consistently shows me has changed who I am in more ways than I thought I could ever even dream of.

My mentors are my rock. They keep me grounded. They’re individuals who I can’t even begin to imagine what my life would look like without.

So here’s to all the mentors out there who have changed lives, and who have changed MY life. I respect and admire you all so much – more than words can form. And I hope to one day be that person to many others, just as you have been to me.
