Three, six, five. When put together, these three numbers form a year. Seconds become minutes, minutes become hours, hours become days, days become weeks, weeks become months, and months become years. In the blink of an eye, it seems that an entire year has come and gone, and it’s time to begin a new year. A fresh start. Clean slate.
Every year during the holiday season, I find myself reflecting on the year, all my blessings, all my trials, and all my accomplishments. Some years it feels as though there were more trials that I faced than in other years. In other years, it seems I had my best yet. While reflecting on this 2017 holiday season, I saw many things in a new light.
We tend to live life in terms of what has happened in a year’s time. We say things like “this year has not been my year” or “this has been the best year yet.” Why do we choose to see our lives in years rather than days? We tend to set goals only based on the start of a new year, and can’t begin those goals until January 1st.
What if, we chose to live our lives in a smaller picture rather than always waiting for the big picture? What if we didn’t wait for a new year to start to accomplish the things that we want to accomplish? What if we chose to set goals throughout the entire year, rather than only setting them for January 1st? What if we chose to be the best versions of ourselves each and every day as the year goes by, rather than only for the first week of the new year?
I had set goals for myself at the end of 2016, and I accomplished every one of them, but continued to work beyond each of them throughout 2017. It was because I pushed myself throughout the year, that I accomplished what I wanted to accomplish, and it was through pushing myself that I had one of the most memorable and remarkable years that I have ever had.
Every year we are going to face good and bad. Loved ones are going to pass, we are going to fail, and there will be tears. However, it’s through the victories, the new challenges, the acceptance and love that we experience, the random acts of kindness, and the little things in life that bring happiness, that will make any year “the best year yet.”
Happy New Year to all! May 2018 be filled with endless blessings, love all around, kindness toward others, strength to face all the trials and obstacles that come our way, and a fresh start to each and every day to begin all over again.
