An Open Letter To All You Bridesmaids Out There

Hey bridesmaids!

Your sister or friend is getting married. You’ve thrown the shower, the bachelorette party, and prepared yourself many times mentally not to shed a tear during the ceremony. You probably feel like you have everything under control and are ready to walk down that aisle. However, I have one more thing to add to your preparation:
This day is not about you.
bridesmaids
You heard that right.

The wedding day isn’t about you. It’s not about how your dress fits, how tightly your hair is pinned in its style, it’s not about how high your heels are, it’s not about the deodorant stain you got on your dress, and it’s not about how you’re going to deliver that speech later on.

All too often I witness bridesmaids making the day more about them, rather than acknowledging that the special day has little to do with them, and everything to do with who asked them to stand by their side to begin with.

So bridesmaids, let’s put an end to that. Let’s be honored and humbled that we were asked to stand by our friend’s side on what’s sure to be one of the happiest days of her life. Let’s not complain when our friend is wanting to take pictures in the heat or in the cold (read that part over again 20 times), let’s stop complaining when the bride wants that picture she has been dreaming of capturing, and let’s stop talking about where our dresses don’t fit perfectly on our bodies. The day isn’t about you. It’s about that special person in your life who asked you to stand by her side as she says “I do.”

Let’s stick to the one job we were asked to do, and that is to support the bride, love her, tell her how beautiful she looks, and stand by her side. Then of course, dance all night on the dance floor with her. Cheers to being the best bridesmaid ever!
