One of my favorite musicals growing up was “The Sound of Music.” I remember watching it all the time, I memorized all the lyrics to my favorite songs, and I would look forward to the next time I would watch it again, every time it came to the ending of the movie.
In December of 2013, NBC came out with “The Sound of Music Live!”
I remember watching it live that evening it was released, but it wasn’t until that night that I really listened to the lyrics of what in my opinion is one of the greatest songs in the musical.
The song is called “Climb Every Mountain,” and in the Live version, one of the greatest Broadway stars, Audra McDonald played the role that sang the song. And I remember that evening my eyes filled up with tears, for it was the very first time I had actually listened to the lyrics, and they just clicked with me.
Here’s a small snippet from the song:
“Climb every mountain
Search high and low
Follow every byway
Every path you know
Climb every mountain
Ford every stream
Follow every rainbow
‘Till you find your dream”
It’s such a powerful piece.
The way I take the meaning to the lyrics is that we’re all climbing a mountain to this life. There are constant highs and constant lows. We’ll never be constantly climbing uphill. It’s always changing, but that’s okay, because so are mountains.
We all have a dream. But that dream can change in a year, it can change in two weeks, it can change in a day, it can change in an hour.
And it’s okay for it to change, but I think it’s also kinda scary for many of us to change that dream.
Life’s a mountain. And there’s usually more than one path to get to the top of that mountain. But when we choose that path that we feel is right in our hearts, that dream that we want to get to, we will get there. It’s just about continuing to make that climb, and following that path regardless of how scary or steep or far away it is. We will get there.
So this is just a reminder to you my friend. To please never stop climbing and chasing after that dream or those dream(s) of yours. You can get there. With the right gear, you can reach the top of that mountain. And what an incredible feeling that will be to be on top, and see the journey that was followed to get to that dream.
